THE HEMP SONG
Words and Music By Sam Creigh
Sam Says: This is my protest song--every folksinger worth his
salt has got to have one! It is full of a lot of attutude
about the outrageous prohibition on what is arguably the most
useful agricultural plant in the history of mankind. Hemp's
vast potential for food, fiber, and fuel can be used to save
family farms worldwide, to keep open land open, and to help solve
many of today's most serious environmental problems. The
fact that the multi-national corporations have schemed with their
bought-off politicians to make and to keep hemp illegal only
underscores the importance of this excellent resource. The
plant was never a problem for the average American at any point
in our history. The question to ask yourself is, "what
is freedom, and can prohibition even be possible in the land of
the free"? Support hemp farming and the hemp industry in the
USA by supporting your local activists and candidates who favor
repeal of the prohibition on hemp. Power to the people!
Verse 1
There once was a time in this fair country
When people used the hemp plant every day
God gave the hemp plant to the people, now
Gov'ment come and take the hemp plant away
Gov'ment come and take the hemp plant away
Gov'ment come and take the hemp plant away
Verse 2
I don't give a damn about your special interests
All the soft money done bought you away
But listen up, Buster, you work for the people, now
Truth and freedom for the people today
Truth and freedom for the people today
Chorus
And it's hey don't you know--hemp is a very fine plant to grow
In the land of the free
Hey what'cha say--let the people grow the hemp plant today
From sea to shining sea
Verse 3
Didn't have a problem 'til you passed prohibition
Crimes without a victim get you locked away
We gotta change the laws--we gotta save the planet
Let the people grow the hemp plant today
Let the people grow the hemp plant today
Let the people grow the hemp plant today
All they are are laws, all we have to do is
change 'em
